Thousands of criminals are getting off “tough” community orders by telling probation officers that they’ve overslept. Other excuses include “forgetting” or having no transport.
Edward Leigh, chairman of the all party Public Accounts Committee said: “Too often, offenders who have been given a community order are escaping justice. The law abiding tax payers of this country deserve better.”
